Emeke

Emeke Buitelaar (1958) is a Dutch painter. She began her career as a teacher, but switched to art after some time. At first she focused on monoprints, mainly of geishas and encounters. As her interest in American-Indian cultures increased, het focus shifted to oil paintings, and painting objects.
Her work is characterised colour, and a mix of realistic and symbolic elements. Especially American-Indian influences are playing an important role. On October 10th, 1995, she was given the American-Indian name of Ala wa sta we-chez, which stands for She who takes the right path. Besides a plastic artist, she is a performing artist as well. She gives shape to her interest in American Indians through shamanic dance.
In 2000, Buitelaar participated in the project 12 x Holland, for which she worked on Hirado, in Japan, in the month of August. In 2003, she was a final candidate for the award of Artist of the Year. Since 2000 she is producing oil paintings on the theme of man and animal, and her interest in wworking with mosaic has been growing steadily. In 2004, together with four other artists, she decorated a PT  Cruiser for the project Art is enterprise, and enterprise is art.
For a long time, she studied the perception of time of the Mayas. Buitelaar made a series of twenty sun seals. Het mosaics show the Maya stories as well.
2009 was her Time==Art year, with the realization of her romantic meeting place in the town centre of Almere, commissioned by the Dutch municipality of Almere. It consists of four massive benches and a bell tower in mosaic, in Maya colours.
